Consecutive translation is a technique generally used during conventions, conferences or formal meetings attended by one single speaker and a wide audience.

Consecutive translation, as suggested by the word itself, arrives consequently to the speaker’s speech. He will interrupt his speech at 10-15 minutes intervals in order to allow the interpreter to translate what stated.
The translator, in this case, will not need any particular equipment, but his unique working tool will be the notes taken during the speech.
Consecutive translation, actually, uses a note-taking technique made of symbols, abbreviations and designs. There are some symbols which are generally adopted but, over time and experience, every translator will develop his own and personal technique which often will also be even impossible to understand to other interpreters.

Consecutive translation has the advantage to entail lower technical costs, since it does not need any particular equipment. However, it can have the inconvenient to extend the event duration, till almost doubling it.
Consecutive translation therefore requires a greater expenditure of intellective energy both for the translator and the audience which can otherwise easely loose the thread of the conversation because of periodic interruptions.
